Porthcawl RNLI benefit from local donation

John Abraham, Chairman of Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat Station, was delighted to accept a donation for the benefit of the RNLI from the club captain and ladies captain of the Grove Golf Club. Money was raised by Captain Keith Davies and the ladies Captain, Beverley Heatman’s husband Clive who both picked up sponsorship when they took part in this years Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim.

The hardy swimmers had raised a total of over £1300 and this was split between the RNLI Porthcawl and Wales Air Ambulance.

John said:

‘As a charity the RNLI relies totally on donations like this and it is very reassuring to know that people keep us in mind and help so much to keep our crews trained and equipped’.

Lifeboat Operations Manager, Philip Missen MBE, said:

‘The crew are very aware of the costs involved each time they have a call out. Each rescue is different and depends very much on the sea conditions at the time, they are confident knowing that the RNLI provides them with the very latest professional training and the most suitable lifeboats to meet the ever increasing demands of the service. Porthcawl’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires is the fastest lifeboat type in the RNLI’s fleet. This has proven to be a great asset to us and all those who use the sea around our part of the coast. Last year proved to be one of our busiest for callouts so donations of this type are greatly appreciated.’

‘Several of the crew recently received the latest RNLI training in the use of radio and navigation equipment and Keith did tell me when he visited us that he was an ex radio officer in the Merchant Navy so he would know the benefits of this training’.
