Powell Hosts Ministerial Meeting in Machynlleth on Future Dyfi Crossing

William_PowellWilliam Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat for Mid and West Wales, hosted a meeting in Machynlleth’s Canolfan Owain Glyndŵr last Thursday between local business leaders, Machynlleth Town Council members, the town’s Independent County Councillor Michael Williams and Edwina Hart AM – Welsh Government Minister for Economy, Science and Transport – on options of the replacement/improvement of the existing A487 Dyfi Bridge Crossing.

William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, said:

“It was a great pleasure to host a meeting between local stakeholders at the Canolfan Owain Glyndŵr last Thursday.

“It is essential that when the Welsh Government takes forward major infrastructure developments like a new Dyfi Bridge that it does so with the full support and input of the community it serves.

“As such it was very positive to see a strong attendance from both the Town Council and local business owners and I am very grateful to the Minister for setting aside the time to come to Machynlleth.

“In my view the best option remains the construction of a new crossing upstream of the existing route. It was the clear view of the majority of local businesses represented that any new route must not be connected to the trunk road network in such a way as to completely bypass Machynlleth Town Centre.”

David Hennigan, Owner Manager of Hennigan’s Top Shop, Machynlleth’s prize winning Fish and Chip Shop, added:

“It is essential that any new crossing does not double as a bypass of Machynlleth due to the adverse effect it would have on local businesses throughout the town.”
