Prints and textiles are show in two new exhibitions at Aberystwyth Arts Centre from July – September.
From July 17 to September 4, Gallery 2 hosts Comtemporary Artists Prints.
The show explores the diversity of contemporary printmaking, including works from printmakers who maintain traditional techniques which have been used for hundreds of years as well as those who have adopted the latest technological advances.
A wide-ranging selection collects works from the UK, France and Germany, highlighting the extensive opportunities of technique open to the modern printmaker. Many works will be for sale.
Among the artists included: Jake Blanchard, John Breakey, Sally Elford, Edwina Ellis, Cedric Green, Al Heighton, Anita Klein, Roman Klonek, Ann Lewis, Diane Murphy, Louise Nowell, Mark Peronnet, Patrick Savile (Bitten and Pressed pictured).
The Dartboard for Witches, Contemporary work in textiles, is in Gallery 1, from July 23 to September 18.
Textile has strong associations – it is our second skin for most of the day, so consciously or not we all have an intimate knowledge of it as a material. The very familiarity and association of textiles with the everyday domestic has in the past made it difficult to see it used as a serious material for artworks. But in recent years, artists have cut textiles loose from the limitations of domestic and decorative use – wonderful as these are – to explore the material’s wider possibilities in carrying meaning.
This exhibition brings together works by artists who use textile methods and materials in their fine art practice, often in unexpected ways, with the focus on the human figure.
