Profile: Becca White – Musician

Becca White has had a meteoric rise to stardom over the last 15 months. Although still only just approaching fifteen years old, her musical career goes back to Ysgol Deiniol, Marchwiel near Wrexham, as early as the age of six, when her primary school teacher, Mrs Guy, told her that she could REALLY sing!

Her career then took her to the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, a tour of Poland and also the National Eisteddfod of Wales, where her interest in Welsh language music started.

Early in 2009, she and her parents approached Welsh music producer, John Grindell, in the hope that he might record some Welsh demos for her. What actually happened was to change her life.

“I asked her, ‘do you want to sing for fun or do you want to be a pop star?’ ” John Grindell recalls. The reply was obvious, “A pop star, please!”

She first recorded a single, Disgo, which was played extensively on BBC Radio Cymru. It was featured by Robin Owain Jones on the BBC C2 service and her Myspace site was also featured. An appearance at Radio One DJ Huw Stephen’s “Swn Festival” in Cardiff followed soon after.A follow-up single, Mor Anffyddlon (So Unfaithful) was released in November and a third, Don i ddim Isio (Didn’t Wanna Do It) came soon after that. It was around Christmas 2009 that she suddenly dominated the Techno Charts on Myspace and the rest is history!

Her popularity on Myspace has lead to her having fans across the world, particularly in the USA and Portugal, where she recently toured and released a Portuguese language single. Her first album was released earlier this year and the second is already being recorded. The future looks bright for Becca White!
