Progress for former school site redevelopment plans

Redevelopment of Swansea’s former Sketty Primary School site has come a step closer.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet has now agreed to dispose of the Authority’s leasehold interest in the land to help progress redevelopment plans.

The Coastal Housing Group wants to develop around 45 flats on the land at Carnglas Road in Tycoch.

The affordable housing would be aimed at people working in the area who’d like to find accommodation nearby.

Cllr Gareth Sullivan, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic and Strategic Development, said: “I’m pleased that plans for the former Sketty School site are making progress.

“The provision of affordable housing in this location in the west of Swansea would help address a significant shortage of such homes in the area and would help combat the problem of a long-standing vacant site.”

The land, which amounts to about one acre, was occupied by Sketty Primary School from 1908 until its closure and relocation to new premises in 2004.

Geoff Pettifor, Director of Development for Coastal Housing Group, said: “We’re delighted at having the opportunity to redevelop this site in the west of Swansea where younger, working people are very often priced out of the housing market. Our first step will be to clear the site when we hope to salvage some of the old materials for re-use in other developments. We anticipate starting work within 15 months or so.”
