Public demand for more parking wardens

Swansea Council is hoping to strengthen its parking enforcement team by recruiting a further ten parking wardens.

The recruitment plan is one of a number of recommendations to improve the service and help cope with the demands of residents.

The Council took over control of parking enforcement from the Police in September 2008. A team of 24 enforcement officers was recruited and since then this has enabled the Council to have an average of 10 officers patrolling at any one time.

Following a review of the service, the Council has developed further plans to meet the needs of residents and reduce the amount of illegal parking across Swansea.

Further recommendations include the introduction of a mobile enforcement vehicle and redeployable cameras which could support the work of the parking enforcement teams.

Phil Davies, Swansea Council’s Parking Enforcement Manager, said: “Parking problems are becoming the main topic at almost all Pact meetings held in Swansea. We also get a large volume of calls to patrol communities throughout Swansea.

“We have limited resources and this means we are limited in the level of enforcement we can provide.

“Recruiting a further ten officers means we can address the concerns of residents and ensure streets and roads do not suffer from illegal parking.”
