Public Meeting on Schools Federation

The governing bodies of Glyn Derw High School and Michaelston Community College are holding a public meeting to discuss the federation of the two schools in the west of the city.

Cardiff Council officers are currently supporting the governing bodies in their public consultation on the federation of the schools. The consultation period comes to an end on November 24, 2010.

A public meeting for members of the public and interested parties to hear about the proposal will be held at Windsor Clive Primary School, Grand Avenue, Ely on Wednesday November 3 at 7pm.

The consultation on federation follows a previous public consultation exercise earlier this year on an original proposal by the Council to amalgamate Glyn Derw High School and Michaelston Community College as part of the reorganisation of secondary schools in Ely and Caerau.

The possibility of establishing a federation between the schools was raised during the first consultation and consequently, the governing bodies of both schools agreed to consult on this option.

The proposed federation, which if agreed would begin in September 2011,  would include the reduction in size of the schools to ten forms of entry and a proposed capital investment of £8m if a bid to the Welsh Assembly Government is successful.

The benefits of federation include enhancing opportunities for young people by combining forces to achieve greater purchasing power and the opportunity to share resources, teaching staff, facilities and ideas.

People attending next month’s public meeting can submit their comments about the proposals at the meeting, or email their views to [email protected] or [email protected] The consultation document also includes a form on the back page for interested parties to complete.

At the end of the consultation period, responses received will be collated in a report for the two governing bodies to consider and make a decision on whether to proceed with the federation.
