Pupils ‘go nuts’ in the Greenfield Valley

A group of pupils from Holywell have planted hazel nut trees at the top of the Greenfield Valley.

The pupils from Ysgol Gwenffrwd, which gained eco-school status in March 2009, carried out the planting as part of a scheme of landscaping for Flintshire County Council, designed to improve the quality of the link between Holywell town and the Greenfield Valley footpath; using funding provided by a supermarket developer secured using planning agreements.

The pupils were working in partnership with ‘Transition Holywell and District’ which has the objective of inspiring and supporting community action in order to respond effectively and positively to climate change and diminishing resources.

One of its aims is to involve more local schools in planting orchards or even forest gardens in order to build local resilience.

Other local projects, which are due to take place using the funding, include improvements to the town’s underpass, the steps to tower gardens and better signage.
