Pupils enjoy Olympic spirit

Pupils from Sketty Primary School were recently invited to get into the Olympic spirit, with the help of Swansea College students.

The Year 4 pupils were given the challenge of designing a mascot and merchandise that could promote the 2012 Games. This was part of a special six-week course that examined the history and values of the event while also developing the students’ entrepreneurial skills.

The pupils were helped by Welsh Baccalaureate Sport students from the Tycoch campus.

“Each pupil was encouraged to stretch their imaginations and think about what they would like to see in the shops to commemorate the Games,” says Enterprise Education Manager Sue Poole. “They were fascinated with how the Olympics came into being and this research really helped them to visualize their ideas and then transform them into practical products.”

The winners were Annie Dunn, who designed an Olympic themed t-shirt for teddy bears and Jacob Hopkins, who created a handy pac-a-mac in a Union Jack bag.

Prototypes of the t-shirt and pac-a-mac were then produced by a local company, J and S Products.

“J and S were hugely supportive of the pupils and waived their fee for the prototypes,” adds Sue. “It’s fantastic when local businesses get behind school projects such as this.”
