Putting the brakes on speeding traffic

Caerphilly county borough council is taking positive steps to reduce the speed of traffic through the villages of Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen.

A new trial 20mph advisory speed limit is being introduced this week on the A468 in Machen outside the local primary school. This would be the first time that a 20mph speed restriction is imposed on a main road within the county borough.

CCBC cabinet member Cllr Rob Gough said, “We have introduced successful 20mph zones outside a number schools in the area, but this would be the first scheme to be implemented on a main ‘A road’.”

Local ward member Cllr Ron Davies welcomed the move, “The speed of traffic traveling through our village has been a concern for a number of years. This new limit will help reduce the speed of traffic and sends a clear message to motorists that ‘twenty is plenty’ outside the school gates.”

Other schemes in the area include the construction of a new pedestrian crossing point in Bedwas which will allow local people to safely cross a busy section of road near Bedwas Cemetary.

A vehicle activated speed sign is also in use in Machen which flashes a warning sign to drivers that exceed the speed limit through the village.

The A468 is the main route through Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen and the road sees significant levels of vehicle movements each day. These schemes will help protect residents, especially local school children, and make the route safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.
