Bethan Jenkins AM has written to the leader of Swansea Council and the Vice Chancellor of Swansea University to ask them to confirm or deny reports that possession of the Dylan Thomas Centre is to switch from the local authority.
The Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West has told both Chris Holley and Richard B Davies of her concern that the centre will no longer be used as a venue for the arts and exhibitions, arguing that such a move would be a blow to Dylan Thomas’ legacy in his “ugly, lovely town”.
In her letter, Bethan says:
“The Centre has a strong part to play in the success of Swansea as a cultural hub. I am writing to enquire about any discussions that are taking place between Swansea Council and Swansea University, regarding the possible takeover of the centre by the university.
“Can you to confirm whether or not this is true, because I would like to voice my objections to any possibility of the Dylan Thomas Centre’s role changing in relation to the arts without an open and transparent consultation with the public and those who use it on a daily and weekly basis?
“Dylan Thomas was one of the most prominent poets from Wales, and I would hope that his legacy will be retained and remembered by ensuring the success of the Dylan Thomas Centre as a place where arts and creativity can thrive in the area, for future generations to come.”
Bethan added:
“We don’t know for sure what – if any – the plans are. What I am asking for is for both parties – if they are involved, as reports suggest – to move swiftly to answer these stories, as an air of uncertainty does no one any good – not least staff working at the centre.”
