Race for Magners League play-off spot

Twenty one games down and the Magners League season for three of the four Welsh regions hinge on the final round of action this evening.

The Blues, Ospreys and Scarlets can all still grab themselves a Magners League play-off spot but it is going to be tight at the top.

Irish provinces Munster and Leinster have already secured themselves a semi-final berth so that leaves the three Welsh sides and Ulster to battle it out for the two remaining positions.

Ulster currently sit at the top of the chasing pile and they need just a point from tonight’s clash with the Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade to progress – leaving just one place for the Welsh sides to compete for.

The Dragons may be out of the running for a top four finish but just as they have done in recent weeks with victories over the Blues and Ospreys, Darren Edwards’ side can have a big part to play on the play-off proceedings.

The easiest route is for the Blues – who just have to rely on themselves. If they win at the Scarlets they make it through to the last four.

Defeat however at the Parc y Scarlets will allow Ospreys a chance, and if that happens and the current Magners League Champions beat bottom side Aironi, they will secure the fourth spot.

If Ulster come away from Newport with no points at all, the Blues and Ospreys could both make it through if they win their games.

If the Ospreys lose out in Northern Italy and the Scarlets win against the Blues – denying them a bonus-point in the progress then its Nigel Davis’ side who make it through.
