Radio Cymru unveils Rock and Pop Awards 2011 winners

There was day-long excitement on BBC Radio Cymru on Thursday (7 April) as the station revealed the winners of its much-anticipated annual Rock and Pop Awards 2011. The winners were announced on various programmes throughout the day.

Live sessions and interviews were kicked off with one of the most anticipated categories, BBC Radio Cymru RAP Awards’ Best Band 2010, revealed on the Dafydd and Caryl morning show. It was won by the north Wales band Yr Ods.

Other winners were:

  • Jen Jeniro – Song of the Year
  • Y Niwl – Album of the Year
  • Crash.Disco! – Group or Artist that came to prominence in 2010
  • Gareth Bonello – Composer of the Year
  • Y Niwl – Live Band of the Year
  • David Wrench – Producer of the Year
  • Cate Le Bon – Female Artist of the Year
  • Al Lewis – Male Artist of the Year
  • Gŵyl Gardd Goll – Live Event of the Year
  • Gwibdaith Hen Frân – BBC Radio Cymru’s C2 Chart Award
  • Y Gwylanod – BBC Radio Cymru’s C2 Session of the Year

Steve Eaves was announced the winner of the Special Contribution to Welsh Music award on Monday.

“BBC Radio Cymru’s Rock and Pop Awards is an annual highlight in Wales’ music scene,” says Sian Gwynedd, BBC Radio Cymru and Welsh Television Editor. “The RAP Awards, whose selecting panel consists of representatives from the rock and pop scene including record labels, promoters and event organisers, celebrate all the music that has been produced during the past year.

“This year the Awards were celebrated throughout the day on Radio Cymru, with winners being announced on Dafydd and Caryl, Nia and Geraint Lloyd programmes plus numerous live sessions by various bands.

“I’m particularly pleased that the Special Contribution award was won this year by Steve Eaves. His contribution to the rock scene in Wales has been invaluable and there is great respect for him.”
