RAF man is business high-flyer

Carl McDermott, a Project Manager at the UK’s Ministry of Defence, recently graduated with a first class honours from the University of Glamorgan.

Whilst Carl, 48, followed his father’s instructions and went out to work by joining the RAF at 16, instead of staying on in further education, he eventually worked his way up the career ladder in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and left 24 years later as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer. He then joined the Ministry of Defence where he attained the grade of Senior Professional Technical Officer the equivalent of Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force.

Whilst Carl has succeeded in progressing his career he has also managed to study his way to the top, by graduating from Glamorgan Business School with a first class honours in BA (Hons) Management and Business. He said: “I have always wanted to study for a degree, its been a personal goal of mine for as long as I can remember. I chose Management and Business because I have always been interested in business and I have a line management role in the Ministry of Defence, so it seemed to fit.”

Carl is a Project Manager for the Ministry and works with the Royal Navy on the Seagnat decoy launcher system, he has already put his degree to good use as he has changed his management style to suit his team, he now plans to complete a MBA and has no regrets about choosing to study his first degree at Glamorgan Business School, he added: “I chose Glamorgan because I had heard that they had a reputation for a good business degree, I can see why the School has a good reputation. The tutors really want you to succeed not just for their own end but for yours, the support to me and the delivery of course has been outstanding.”
