Ramsay: First Minister shifts position on budget savings

Responding to the First Minister’s apparent support for an offer from David Cameron to postpone Wales’ share of public spending cuts from this financial year, Shadow Finance Minister Nick Ramsay AM said:

“I welcome this 11th-hour conversion from the First Minister.

“It is a considerable shift in position by Carwyn Jones. When we first put forward this proposal in March he adopted a very different tone.

“The UK Government wants to work with the Assembly Government to get the people of Wales and Britain through this debt crisis.

“It is, of course, entirely a matter for the Assembly Government as to whether they delay any in-year spending reductions until next April.

“But we believe by doing so ministers in Cardiff will be able to reassess their spending commitments and ensure frontline services are prioritised and receive the money they need.”
