Randerson “Unemployment rise is a tragedy”

Commenting on today’s figures showing unemployment has increased by 0.5%, to 9.2% compared to a UK wide fall, Welsh Lib Dem Shadow Economy Minister, Jenny Randerson AM said:

“Throughout the recession, unemployment levels in Wales have been all over the place, but I am concerned that a pattern is now emerging. Wales is consistently facing higher unemployment than most of the rest of the UK.

“We are now nearly a percentage point and a half above the UK average, and that is nothing short of a tragedy.

“I consistently warned when we had slightly more positive news last year that things were likely to get worse again and these figures bear that out.

“Labour in Westminster, and with their Plaid Cymru allies in Cardiff Bay have failed to lift Wales from its ultra vulnerable position. Unless we rebalance the economy in a fairer way, I fear that more and more Welsh families will face the bad news we have seen today.”
