MediaRhondda Cynon Taf students and teachers cleaned up at the recent Media4Schools awards, walking away with 6 awards and 4 commendations, out of a possible 11, for their outstanding work in media film production.

The Media4Schools programme is an education based media training initiative which introduces a combination of TV Programme Production and Enterprise for schools. Pupils and their teachers are then trained in media production skills and techniques and then supported and mentored to produce their own programmes.

Schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf walked away with:

  • Best Regional Film – Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg – Road to Sustainability,
  • Best Edited Film – Treorchy Comprehensive – New York and Washington,
  • Best Sports-Related Film – Tonyrefail Comprehensive School – 5×60 Skiing,
  • Best Community Film – Tonypandy Community College – Clydach Vale Coal and Community.

The award categories also included a special award for the hard work and dedication of the teachers and staff involved in the project – Champion Teacher Award, which was awarded to 2 special Rhondda Cynon Taf teachers/staff – Julie Atkins from Tonypandy Community College and Catrin Owen from Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg.

Julie Atkins, said: “I am delighted to receive this award, but it is the young people that deserve it for all their hard work. The Media4Schools initiative gives young people a fantastic opportunity to shine and learn things that would not ordinarily be available to them. I think its fair to say – well done all round for RCT!”

Councillor Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, said: “Both the student and teaching talent in our County Borough is outstanding and this once again provides evidence of the diverse activities available in our schools. Congratulations to all those involved!”
