Caerphilly County Borough Council is urging residents to be vigilant about a scam that is currently circulating throughout Wales regarding council tax payments.
The council has recently received some calls from residents who have been contacted by a person claiming to be from the council, who states that residents’ homes have been re-banded for council tax payments, and that a refund is owed to them due to the payment of too much council tax.
Their bank details were then requested in order to process the reimbursement.
Cllr Colin Mann, cabinet member for finance, resources and sustainability said, “We would urge everyone to remain vigilant and to never disclose bank details if they have any suspicions. We at Caerphilly County Borough Council would never contact residents requesting bank account details in this way, and if residents are in any doubt, I would urge them to contact our Trading Standards team on 01495 235 291 for information and advice.”
