Revealing the Secrets of Snowdonia’s Lakes

To coincide with the 60th Anniversary of Snowdonia National Park, Y Lolfa has published Cyfrinachau Llynnoedd Eryri, an attractive volume by a photographer from Waunfawr, Geraint Thomas. As well as tracing the history of each of the 140 lakes in the National Park, Geraint also photographed each one – either on foot or from the air with a paraglider, in a project that took two years to complete.

The book contains striking photographs that were taken between sunrise and sunset, in frost and flower buds, with several of the lakes situated in very remote locations. But this book is much more than a collection of photographs. It also gives the history, myths and folk stories associated with the lakes, stories that have been passed down from memory through hundreds of years and that have, at last, been recorded on paper.

“These are the lakes that have contributed so much to our lives over the centuries,” says Geraint Thomas, and from Llyn Llydaw to Llyn Tegid, each one has its story – including the nine lakes near Llanberis, the most diverse collection of lakes within one vale anywhere in the world.

Caerwyn Roberts, the Chairman of Snowdonia National Park Authority, says that this book is “…a body of work that captures Snowdonia at her best, by combining the old and the new in a book that is a masterpiece of images and words in Welsh and English.”

This book will make an ideal gift for anyone this Christmas, from walkers to storytellers and paragliders!

It is published by Y Lolfa, at £14.95, and is available from all good bookshops, or from Panorama gallery in Caernarfon.
