Rhyl’s RNLI volunteer Coxswain Peter Robinson, has retired from sea-going duties on reaching the RNLI’s maximum age.
He will remain on the team as part of the shore support crew. His Role as leader of the crew has been taken by Mechanic Martin Jones.
At a surprise dinner at Rhuddlan Golf Club on Friday 24th September, Peter was presented with a framed sea-going service certificate by Training Divisional Inspector Andy Hurley, and a new helmet and safety jacket for his new role on the shore crew, by new Coxswain Martin Jones.
Peter said:
“For one of the few times in my life I was utterly speechless! The whole night was a complete surprise to me, and I am thrilled and proud to be part of a great team, and I thank everyone for their good wishes.”
Peter, together with his wife Jan, will still take an active part in station life, but he now is able to take holidays at his leisure without having to organise replacement Coxswains, or deal with his job as a well-known local plumber, without having to be near the station.
The family association with Rhyl lifeboat station still remains on the boat, as Peter’s son Callum is a crew member on the All-weather lifeboat “Lil Cunningham” and has just been promoted to helmsman on the Inshore lifeboat “Godfrey and Desmond Nall”
