With children going back to school this week, Cardiff Council’s Road Safety Team is launching a campaign to remind people of the dangers faced by causing congestion at school gates.
Executive Member for Traffic and Transportation Cllr Lisa Ford will meet with pupils and staff at Fairwater Primary School at 9am on the 8th September to launch the campaign and to remind parents and guardians of the importance of safety around school gates
The Road Safety Team has created a special radio advert to warn people of the danger of school gate congestion. The advert will highlight the issue and tells the story of a child being dropped off by her mother, whilst her back is turned for a moment. The child runs out onto the road with dire consequences.
In an effort to protect children and adults outside schools, Cardiff Council has constructed 23 School Safety Zones. These zones are designed to provide safer pedestrian crossing facilities and are areas where parking is strictly forbidden. Parents and guardians are respectfully asked not to drop off their children outside the school or park within the confines of these zones, but to park a short distance away and walk with their children.
The campaign is also being supported by the Council’s Civil Enforcement Officers and South Wales Police and will run throughout the month of September. Executive Member for Traffic and Transportation, Cllr Lisa Ford, said: “I am delighted that the Road Safety Team is focusing on school gate safety this September as children return for the new term. Traffic around school gates can be very busy and I would remind people to be mindful of children when they park or drive near schools. This campaign highlights the issue and I hope it will help tackle the problems that can occur near school gates.
