The Valleys hasn’t been well known for its Roman history, until now that is. A fascinating series of events at Gelligaer this winter intend to make sure that both locals and visitors to the area are made aware of just how exciting the Roman occupation of the Valleys was.
Two thousand years ago Gelligaer was one of the frontier forts used by the Romans to keep the native Silure tribe in its place, and the site of the fort, which lies at the heart of the village, is currently being reinterpreted. As part of the project, a series of Roman-themed events are taking place, which include something for everyone, from talks by renowned experts, to walks (where you could encounter the odd Roman or two), mosaic making and even Roman cooking!
Celebrations kick-off with a talk by well known Silure expert Dr Ray Howell at Llancaiach Fawr on November 23rd. There will also be a series of educational activities that week, but the focus of the events is a full day of family fun on November 27th, with a range of indoor activities taking place at the newly refurbished St Catwg’s Community Hall, as well as plenty of on-site goings-on too!
On the 27th, you can get your ‘finds’ evaluated by experts as well as seeing a fascinating collection of Roman items that have been uncovered by some local amateur archaeologists; find out how to wear a toga; try your hand at Roman pottery; meet an Edwardian archaeologist; chat with Gelligaer Historical Society, walk the Roman Road to see the roman practise camps; join a guide who will help bring the remains of the fort to life, and find out more about the Gelligaer Roman Fort project.
In addition, St Catwg’s Church will open its doors throughout the day and will be the venue for historical talks as well as a service of Thanks Giving for the Heritage of Gelligaer at 5.15pm.
The event will run from 12pm – 5pm and entry is free.
