Volunteers turned out in force to clear up a proposed new riverside site for walkers and cyclists, adjacent to the Coast Path, in Saltney.
Karen Rippin, Coastal Ranger, said:
“Flintshire Countryside Service, in partnership with Natural Resource Wales, is looking to develop this site over the next few months. We want to install a circular limestone dust path, a viewpoint, a hedgerow for the wildlife and some artwork. It has great potential. There are fantastic views of the river from this point and it’s a great place to see the Dee Bore at high tide.”
Before the clear up, the site was strimmed to allow easy access to litter and over the course of the day 34 bags of litter, children’s plastic toys, furniture and glass were removed. In the past the site, at River Lane, has been a notorious spot for fly tipping but over the past two years rock armour has been installed and the site has seen significant improvements.
Councillor Bernie Attridge, Cabinet Member for Environment said:
“It is vital that we get the message out to the public that fly tipping is not only illegal and an eyesore but it is also a health hazard. This is a great opportunity for the community and will bring Saltney forward as a gateway to the Wales Coast Path.”
Karen said:
“From this point at River Lane visitors can park the car, unload bikes and ride along the cycle path all the way to Connah’s Quay. It’s a fantastic route for families with children and I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the clean up.”
