School Liaison Quiz winners head for Cardiff

An Anglesey secondary school is celebrating after pupils secured a place in the final of the All Wales School Core Programme Quiz.

The year 8 pupils from Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge, were victorious yesterday, (Thursday 20 January), when they beat five other teams from across North Wales in the regional semi-final, staged at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.

The quiz, based on topics the pupils have covered in the lessons given by their School Community Police Officers, taught them about community safety, substance misuse and anti-social behaviour.

The pupils, who are all between 12 and 13 years of age, have a great deal to live up to when they visit the Welsh capital on February 4, as their fellow pupils last year took the title for the whole of Wales.

Mr Alun Roberts, head of year 8 at the school said: “We’re really pleased that the school has won. The pupils have worked very hard for this and are now very keen to win the Welsh title – just like their fellow pupils did last year.”

Maldwyn Roberts, Community Safety Partnership co-ordinator said: “I must congratulate the winners, but I must stress that the standards demonstrated by all the schools have been excellent.”

He added: “The quiz encourages children and young people to learn about the problems caused by drugs and alcohol.”

PC Dewi Thomas, School Community Police Officer for Anglesey and North Gwynedd, will accompany the children to Cardiff. “They have all worked hard, but there is now tremendous pressure for the school to follow in the footsteps of the previous year 8 pupils.”

As well as the winning school, the final saw teams from Ysgol Tryfan, Bangor; Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, Llanrwst; St Brigid’s, Denbigh; St Richard Gwyn, Flint and Ysgol Bryn Alyn, Wrexham, competing for the coveted title.

PC Thomas added: “There were six rounds in total and the teams should all be proud of themselves and we very much look forward to the next stage of the competition.”
