Five Blaenau Gwent councillors braved a cake decorating challenge and were quizzed by over 170 school pupils as part of Local Democracy Week 2010.
Councillors Shirley Ford and John Mason (Nantyglo), Mostyn Lewis (Ebbw Vale South), Anita Hobbs (Tredegar) and John Williams (Rassau) were put on the spot with questions about politics and their roles as elected members.
Pupils from Ystruth, Blantillery and Willowtown primary schools and Abertillery Comprehensive asked the questions.
Following the question and answer sessions the pupils voted for the best candidate using ballot papers and a ballot box.
Councillor John Mason, also Deputy Leader of the Council, was named as the overall winner.
He said: “It’s a real privilege to be voted as the winner by the young people who took part. The day was good fun and we got to learn about some of the issues that are important to young people here in Blaenau Gwent.”
‘Quiz a Councillor’ was the Council’s annual event to mark European Local Democracy Week – which aims to increase people’s knowledge of local democracy.
