School’s new sub bar offers food for thought

Pupils at Pontypridd High School, Cilfynydd, can now ‘sandwich’ healthy eating into their daily timetables, with the opening in the school of a new food outlet called Sub Central.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Catering Services has been working with one of its suppliers, Green Gourmet, to develop the ‘submarine’ style sandwiches similar to high street brands. These products meet with food and nutrition legislation and were sampled by pupils at Pontypridd High School’s healthy eating event in March.

Pupils can choose from brown or white bread, with 11 fillings including marinated chicken tikka, sweet chilli and lamb meatballs. They are all served with salad and a choice of four sauces, in attractive packaging, for just £1.50.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Eudine Hanagan, said: “Catering Services are working with the school to identify different products and ideas which will prove popular with pupils and staff.

“The subs are great value at just £1.50 – and feedback from the pupils and staff after tasting them has been very positive!”

Sub Central will be open during breaktimes and lunchtimes at the school.
