Search for licensed premises oscars underway

The search is on to find licensed premises across Conwy and Denbighshire that could receive special accreditation as part of a national industry oscars for pubs and clubs, the only scheme of its kind in North Wales.

Conwy and Denbighshire Councils’ joint Licensing Teams are administering the Best Bar None scheme, which is backed by the Home Office and the British Institute of Innkeepers.

Twenty licensed premises from across Conwy and Denbighshire were accredited when both councils held their first scheme during 2009. Twenty eight premises applied. The overall winner in 2009 was Club 147, Llandudno, Conwy with the Three Pigeons Inn, Graigfechan, Denbighshire a close runner-up.

This year’s winners will be awarded their honours at a ceremony being staged later this year.

In April, events will be arranged to give prospective candidates the chance to meet the administrators of the scheme for advice and information. Details will be confirmed nearer the time.

Councillor Sharon Frobisher, Denbighshire’s Cabinet Lead Member for Environment, said: “We were delighted with the amount of interest shown in last year’s inaugural awards and we look forward to receiving applications in the 2010 awards.

“Best Bar None is all about promoting and encouraging responsible management of licensed premises and I would encourage any premises who feel they deserve this recognition to give it a go. Having Best Bar None accreditation of this nature can really be a boost to a business, especially in the current economic climate and we are crossing our fingers for a positive response.”

Councillor Philip Evans, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said, “Best Bar None rewards responsible licensees.  The scheme encourages businesses to be an integral part of their community and recognises those licensees that go the extra mile to ensure their customers’ well being. The accreditation process is rigorous and premises must demonstrate their commitment to public safety, prevention of crime of disorder and protecting children from harm.”
