Seeing Dyffryn Gardens in a very different light

Dyffryn Gardens is once again hosting its spectacular “Light up the Night’ event offering visitors the perfect opportunity to enjoy an evening stroll around a stunning illuminated trail.

Previously held in November/December, “Light up the Night” at the Vale of Glamorgan Council-owned tourist attraction runs this year from 23 October to 1 November (6-8.30 pm) and highlights the historical arboretum, special features throughout the gardens and, of course, the house which will be dramatically illuminated.

Dyffryn project manager Gerry Donovan said: “As the nights draw in and the evenings become crisper, ‘Light up the Night’ really does give visitors the opportunity to see the gardens in a very different light. The popularity of this event is increasing every year and 2009 promises to be more exciting than ever.”

Cllr Anthony Ernest, Vale council cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said: “I am delighted that autumn is upon us and that the glorious colours displayed in the gardens will be highlighted at this event. Dyffryn’s role in attracting visitors to the area and providing something different for local residents goes from strength to strength.”

Visitors are reminded that the trail through the gardens is partly on grass, and so it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes and bring a torch.

Being run in conjunction with ‘Light up the Night’ is a Halloween special on Saturday, 31 October, when there will be a ‘spooky twist’ to include an eerie walk, ghostly talks and other scary activities . . . . . listen out for strange noises and things lurking in the darkness. Are you brave enough to enter the gardens?

During half term visitors to the gardens will also be able to take part in the first Big Draw event at Dyffryn on 28 October. As part of a nationwide campaign, visitors will be encouraged to explore and draw the beautiful gardens in fun and interesting ways; suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

Following the success of last year’s event, Dyffryn will host a Christmas fayre in the old restaurant of the house on 5/6 and 12/13 December, with local traders and craftspeople offering a range of gifts and produce. There will also be a range of festive musical entertainment over both weekends with the addition of a visit from Father Christmas on the final weekend.

The final stages of the gardens restoration programme are continuing, with the works to the walled garden progressing well. This project is due for completion during 2010.

Admission charges for ‘Light up the Night’ and the Halloween special are (adult, £5, children, £2, concession, £3, and family, £12), while normal admission (for the winter period 1 November – 28 February) will apply for the Christmas fayre (adult, £3, children, £1, concessions, £2, and family, £7).
