Severn Primary School Celebrates Official Opening

A new Cardiff primary school has marked its official opening with a community celebration event.

Dozens of visitors called in to Severn Primary School, which was formed as a result of the amalgamation of Severn Infant School and Severn Junior School in September 2008, but has only recently been united in one building following the completion of construction work.

Over the last few years, and as part of Cardiff’s schools organisation plan, the Council has been amalgamating infant and junior schools to create all-through, three to 11-years-old primary schools across the city. A number of schools, including Severn Primary, have undergone major investment and refurbishment works.

Visitors were treated to tours around the new facility escorted by pupils who were proud to show off the new developments at the school including a new computer suite, food technology room, art studio, four new classrooms, large hall and kitchen. New outdoor facilities include climbing walls, a trim trail, pond and reading corner.

The big launch and open day came during the school’s Arts Week when pupils had the chance to experience a wide range of creative activities such as puppetry, animation, rap music, batik, felting, drama, belly dancing, clay work, circus skills, drama and rug making.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway was among the visitors along with local members and Assembly Members.

Cllr Salway said: “I’m delighted with the new facilities at Severn Primary School. The children are clearly very proud of their new school.

“The Council has been investing in schools throughout the city to ensure children are receiving their education in an environment that is fit for purpose. I’m sure everyone that came to the open day and all those who have seen the wonderful new developments at the school will be as impressed as I am.  It’s a wonderful learning environment.”

Headteacher, Julie Morris, said: “The smooth transition into one new primary school would not have been possible without the support of the parents and the hard work of the staff. Since going for our Silver Arts Mark we have been able to really show-off the children’s creativity and artistic skills.”
