Shadow Minister writes to Commission calling for a Senedd countdown clock to Olympic opener

With 285 days to go until the very first event of the 2012 Olympic Games takes place in Wales, Mohammad Asghar AM has written to the Assembly Commission calling for a countdown clock to be put up on the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay.

The Shadow Minister for Sport feels a clock could act as a cost-effective reminder to the people of Wales that Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium hosts the first action of the 2012 Games on July 25th.

He said: “Instead of spends such as £6,000 on a plush new table for the Presiding Officer, I’d like to see a countdown clock on the Senedd building – counting down the days until the Olympics comes to Wales.

“I’ve written to the Assembly Commission in the hope that they will consider this expenditure.

“I feel it would make a hugely important statement – reminding the people of Wales how many days remain until July 25th, when the Millennium Stadium will host the very first event of the Games, two days before the opening ceremony”.

The South Wales East AM has also highlighted his amazement at the lack of action taken by the Welsh Government to ensure Wales’ profile is boosted as a consequence of the Olympic Games.

“Frankly, it is astonishing that there’s no strategy in place to seize the host of benefits associated with the Olympic Games.

“The Welsh Government should be telling the world that the very first event of the Olympics takes place in our capital city – but the silence is bewildering.

“Opportunities are being missed and the Welsh Government has big, big questions to answer”.
