Shire Hall scene for historic book launch

Monmouth’s historic Shire Hall is the setting for the launch of a book examining the town’s connection with the Chartism movement over 170 years ago.  It was in Shire Hall’s court room that the trial of John Frost and his fellow Chartist defendants for mass treason was conducted in 1840.  The book, Voices for the Vote, by authors Hwyel, Waycott and James examines the events that led to the trial and the trial itself.

The book launch, to take place on Thursday 7th July from 6pm to 8pm, will also acknowledge those who supported Shire Hall through its recent restoration.  The Grade I listed building which dates back to 1724, has had a £4.5 million refurbishment, £3.2 million of which came from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Thanks to this funding, Shire Hall has established itself as a major historical attraction becoming a major focal point for the town.  It is now licensed for weddings and is suitable for business conferences and private functions.  There is also a programme of inspiring learning for all ages.
