Short stories explained by prize-winning author

Swansea University Creative Writing student Roshi Saul, winner of the Impress Prize 2009, will give a talk about writing short fiction on May 5 at the University, accompanied by readings from her work.

Roshi, who writes under the name of Roshi Fernando, is a final year PhD student working under the supervision of Professor Stevie Davies, Director of Creative Writing at Swansea.

Roshi won the 2009 Impress Prize for New Writers for her composite novel Homesick – a series of interlinked short stories about a community of Sri Lankan immigrants in London.

The talk will give budding short story writers the chance to hear about Roshi’s own practice in the short form.  Roshi will also answer questions about the mechanics of entering literary prizes and offer help in cultivating the discipline necessary to maximise one’s chances in competitions.  She will also advise on how to prepare manuscripts for entry into competitions and for publication in magazines, journals and anthologies.

The talk will take place on Wednesday, May 5 at 4pm in Room 216 of the Keir Hardie Building.  It is free and all are welcome.
