Smarter travel – Parc Menai Travel Planning Project

We all need to travel in a more energy efficient way. The evidence is now stronger than ever that technological improvements alone will not be enough to deliver the scale of emissions reductions we need to see from the transport sector. Only by providing people with suitable alternative ways to travel can we help people make travel choices to help their environment.

Gwynedd Council and partners are seeking to address this through the Môn a Menai Sustainable Travel Area Project (STA Project). This work seeks to deliver an effective, efficient and sustainable transport system for the Menai areas, which best meet the needs of those who live in, work in, and visit the area.

Public transport has a key role to play in this development as does Parc Menai. “More buses operate into Parc Menai than you think” is the message Gwynedd Council wants to convey throughout their STA Project. They are seeking to support and encourage increased sustainable travel to this important employment site.

Richard Glynne Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Sustainable Transport Officer said: “Most of the trips to and from Parc Menai are currently made by people travelling on their own in cars. We want to provide transport choices for people so that they are encouraged to use alternative ways of travelling, and we aim to make the Sustainable Travel Area Area and Parc Menai a regional and national standard of excellence for sustainable travel.”

The Council is producing a comprehensive leaflet covering details of bus services, routes, fares and a timetable to and from Parc Menai. This has been designed specifically to raise awareness and usage of the bus services that operate between Bangor, Anglesey and Parc Menai.

Richard Glynne Jones added: “Our aim by promoting these sustainable links will also provide vital information for local residents regarding seasonal and permanent jobs at Parc Menai which they might previously have dismissed because they thought they could only get to Parc Menai by car.”
Leaflets will be distributed throughout November to businesses on Parc Menai and to bus operators and council offices throughout the Môn a Menai Sustainable Travel Area.

The leaflet is the first of a number of proposed sustainable travel initiatives being developed by Gwynedd Council for use within Parc Menai.

Other initiatives include the establishment of a Travel Partnership with employers and an associated site Travel Plan for Parc Menai. These are intended to underpin and support sustainable travel as part of a wider study into promoting sustainable travel in the Môn a Menai Area that is due for completion in March 2011.
