Smoke on the Water

A Pembrokeshire trout farm has set up an unique smokery business offering its services to local food producers.

The Pembrokeshire Smokery is the brainchild of Vicars Mill Trout Farm in Llandissilio.

Following the success of its trout lines, the Farm looked to develop its business and spotted a gap in the market for a local smokery.

With the aid of Flexible Support 4 Business (managed in Pembrokeshire by Pembrokeshire County Council) the new smokery offers not only smoked trout from its own farm, but also a smoking service for cheeses and meats from other producers in Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.

“This is a very exciting time for us,” said Clair Strevens of the Pembrokeshire Smokery.

“We were aided by Flexible Support 4 Business (FS4B), which helped us with all the planning and financial figures,” she said.

“That enabled us to apply for funds from the Pembrokeshire Lottery and the Local Investment Fund to buy new smoker equipment and set up the business.”

Claire George, Business Development Manager for Pembrokeshire County Council said small businesses such as the Trout Farm were the life blood of the Pembrokeshire economy.

“We know how important it is to support their growth with capital projects like this, that expand product ranges and improve efficiency,” she said.

“And with Pembrokeshire receiving such high recognition in the True Taste Food and Drink Awards this year, the competition is stronger than ever for local food businesses to raise their standards.”
