Social groups for seniors

The latest in a string of social groups for independent over 50s is set to be launched in Swansea in the next few weeks.

The new group in Brynhyfyd will be the eighth to be set up around the city to create opportunities for older people who may feel lonely or isolated to get together in a social setting.

Two years ago Swansea Council teamed up with Network 50+ to generate popular activities and get-togethers to give older people a new lease of life and friendships.

The move followed research which showed that although Swansea had a growing number of independent over 50s and that the number attending existing activities was in decline.  There was a concern that this could lead to people becoming isolated at home as they got older and thus more vulnerable.

In 2008 the Council launched a pilot project to develop and link social opportunities and activities for older people in the Mumbles, West Cross, Mayals and Newton areas. Two social groups resulted from this- one in Mumbles and one in West Cross.

These proved such a success that similar groups have been set up across Swansea including Clydach, Sketty, Bishopston and Gowerton. Groups meet in a range of venues from pubs and restaurants to church halls and community centres.

Activities include everything from chiropody sessions and exercise to day trips, film shows and computer sessions. The people attending decide what they’d like to do and the organisers help to make it happen.

One of the best measures of success is the many friendships that once-isolated older people have now struck up and how many also now meet following or outside the get-togethers.

The latest group will be launched at the Manselton Hotel on Penfilia Road in Brynhyfryd on June 2. A reception will be held there on May 27 for those interested to let them know what’s involved and so they can get a feeling for how they would like the group to go forward.

Debra Hobby, Swansea Council Development Worker for Older People linked to the 50+ Project, said: “We’re absolutely delighted at the success so far and are looking forward to reaching more areas because numbers keep on going up and up. No one has to attend; there are no registers taken or anything like that but they just keep on coming.

“Social interaction from simple get-togethers to specific activities can improve people’s quality of life and help them to feel part of their community and less isolated. It also improves confidence, health and wellbeing.

“Our groups are showing you’re never too old to make new friends and just what a difference that can make to your whole life.”

Future plans include generating socialising opportunities in Morriston.
