South Wales waste plan to go on the road

docks11aAfter advertising the requirements of Prosiect Gwyrdd to the private sector, the project is now starting the public education campaign. Information road shows will be held in each Council area to introduce the aim and possible options that may be available to treat residual waste, after recycling and composting has been maximised in each area.

The road shows will take place during December with a further road show in each Council area during January/February 2010. Information boards will be displayed for the public to view with experienced staff on hand to answer questions from the public.

The first phase of the roadshows is as follows:

• December 1: Road show at Castle Street Car Park (NP7 5EE), Abergavenny Town Centre between 10 am and 4 pm.

• December 8: Road show at the Town Hall Car Park (CF71 7DD) in Cowbridge between 10 am and 4 pm.

• December 10: Road show at Working Street (CF10 1GN) in Cardiff City Centre between 10 am and 4 pm.

• December 12: Road show at West Gate Square (Outside Starbucks) in Newport City Centre between 11 am and 4 pm.

• December 15: Road show at the Twyn Car Park (CF83 1JL) in Caerphilly Town Centre between 10 am and 4 pm.

Cllr Mark Stephens, Chairman of the Joint Committee for Prosiect Gwyrdd, said: “As waste management continues to change in the UK, local authorities are tasked to provide the Infrastructure to deal with waste, as well as develop education schemes to change public attitudes to continue to divert more waste from landfill. The priority is for everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle and compost as much of their waste as possible and each of the partners are committed to this.

“Prosiect Gwyrdd is a partnership to deliver a solution to the remaining waste, after recycling and composting has been maximised, as landfill is no longer environmentally or economically possible. The EU Landfill Directive restricts the amount of waste local authorities can send to landfill. If these restrictions are not met, local authorities will be fined heavily. A website has been developed to explain the options and possible solutions that may be available. Please visit www.prosiectgwyrdd.co.uk . The Project Board can be contacted by email through [email protected] or by phone, 02920 717 523.”
