Sporting girls lead the way

Female fitness continues to thrive in the Caerphilly County Borough as two recent developments clearly demonstrate.

A club boasting more than 200 gymnasts has set up a base in the area and, secondly, a CCBC employee has secured yet another gold medal for her sporting achievements.

Valleys Gymnastic Academy feared their club would come to an end after 11 years when they heard their premises in Ebbw Vale and Abertillery were both closing. It was when Wendy Penson, the club’s Chairperson, sent a heartfelt letter to Caerphilly County Borough Council asking for help that they managed to secure new premises for their 200 members.

On the other side of the Caerphilly County Borough, Zoe Anthony a valued member of the council’s Outdoor Education Team, spends her days helping and encouraging people to face fears and achieve goals – and she has proved that she also takes her own advice! After 10 years of attending the Aberfan Canoe Club, Zoe is now the proud owner of her sixth gold medal after scooping the top honour at a World Canoe Polo Championship in Milan.

“I’d like to congratulate Zoe on this fantastic achievement,” said Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure, “I am also very pleased that we were able to offer the gymnastics club a place to grow and continue to flourish and I’m hopeful that many of our residents will attend this award winning club.”
