Sports Awards Attract Record Entries

The third Sport Pembrokeshire Awards have attracted more entries than any other sports award scheme in Wales.

A record 108 nominations have been received for 12 categories.

The three finalists in each category will be listed in the Western Telegraph on the 18th November and profiled in its 25th November edition – as well as on Radio Pembrokeshire.

The winners will be announced on 27th November at the 2009 Sport Pembrokeshire Award ceremony at Folly Farm.

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Sport, said they were delighted to have received so many nominations, spanning a huge cross-section of sports, from bowls to sailing, gymnastics and karting – as well as the more traditional track and field.

“The standard has been exceptional over the last two years, but this year it is absolutely outstanding,” he said.

“This has been most noticeable in the junior section, and especially in the girls’ category which has received the largest number of nominations ever, of a uniformly very high standard.”

He added: “I would like to take the opportunity to thank our main sponsors – Chevron, The Western Telegraph, Folly Farm and Radio Pembrokeshire – for their continuing support.”

John Deason, Manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, the sport development department of Pembrokeshire County Council, said:

“Grass roots sport is alive and well in Pembrokeshire. These awards are our chance to celebrate sporting success in the county.

“Everyone nominated deserves recognition for their achievements; whether as performer, coach, teacher or organiser – and all nominees are invited, along with guests, to attend the Awards Special Presentation evening on 27th November at Folly Farm.

“If any other member of the county’s sporting fraternity wish to attend please contact the Sport Pembrokeshire Office on 01437 776187 without delay; places are limited.”
