The Year 6 Class with their awards

School children from a Caerphilly school were rewarded for their achievements in sport with awards and prizes at special assembly last week.

Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Caerffili have had a successful sporting year with 91% of children at the school take part in sport during lunch or after school and their netball, rugby, football and athletics teams excelling at a number of competitions.

The winner of the Overall Sports Personality of the Year was Kyle Huish, aged 11, who was presented with a £100 voucher towards a bike or scooter from Halfords in Caerphilly, a month’s free membership to Caerphilly Leisure Centre and a trophy.

Mr Lynn Griffiths, Head teacher at the school said, “The awards provide a perfect platform to recognise the sporting achievements of our pupils who understand the importance of living healthy lives. They also bring the whole school community together to celebrate the achievements of our many sporting teams and recognise the hard work and commitment of our staff who give freely of their time during the dinner hour and after school. This has resulted in our netball, football, rugby, cross country and cricket teams reaching national finals and thereby strengthening our pupils belief in themselves as successful individuals who can succeed in life!!!”

Cllr Poole, Cabinet Member for Communtiy and Lesirue Services at Caerphilly County Borough Council, commented, “This is a wonderful display of schools embracing sport and recognising children’s achievements. Every child who received an award will hopefully be inspired to continue living an active life as they grow up, and will in turn inspire those around them to take up sport.”

All children who have taken part in sport throughout the year were rewarded with a voucher for a FREE month of Kids Plus Membership at their local Leisure Centre, provided by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Leisure Service. Individual prize winners were awarded other prizes such as balls and football shirts, donated by TSS Sports and Friends of the School.
