Welsh Conservative Regional AM Suzy Davies has called for the Welsh Government to help make Swansea, along with other places in Wales, the “go-to locations for national and international sports.”
In the Welsh Assembly Mrs Davies, the Shadow Minister for Sport, said: “I very much welcome the news that Swansea will shortly be hosting the IPC Athletics European Championships this summer.
“This is a great platform to help encourage people with disabilities to take part in sport.”
The South Wales West AM, who is also on the Children, Young People and Education Committee, went on to say: “I would however like to see more action from the Welsh Government to encourage our young people, whether they are disabled or not, to take up sport.
“The number of young people with a disability or sensory impairment who are hooked on sport is a quarter lower than those without a disability. I would hope that events like the IPC Athletics in Swansea and other events in the future can lower this gap.”
“We have an opportunity to market Wales as a great location for sport and it is only through using the facilities in place, like those at Sketty Lane in Swansea, that we will be able to do this.”
