Swans go back to university

THOUSANDS of young people across the city can now gain Children’s University credits by taking part in Football in the Community activities organised by the high-flying Swans.

Swansea Council’s Community Regeneration Unit has joined forces with Swansea City FC to make the scheme possible.

Football in the Community supports increased participation in physical activity and promotes healthy lifestyles by helping communities and schools offer more sporting opportunities.

Five full-time coaches are on hand to offer football and other sports activities both inside and outside school hours.

The Children’s University is an initiative that awards credits to children and young people aged five to 19 who attend activities such as sport, art or computing outside normal school hours.

Gold, silver and bronze awards are then given to children and young people based on their age and the amount of credits they’ve built up.

Linden Jones, Football in the Community Manager at the Swans, said: “This scheme shows that Swansea City Football Club is actively helping our community by encouraging children to live an active and positive lifestyle.

“The Children’s University is a hugely important initiative and we’re delighted that thousands of children will soon be able to get credits by taking part in our popular courses.”

Over 6,000 young people across Swansea have already gained credits through the Children’s University.

Cllr Alan Robinson, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Regeneration, said: “The Children’s University is delighted to be working with the Swans to reward the hard work and commitment of the children taking part in their community courses.

“There are thousands of children and young people throughout Swansea who are gaining invaluable skills by participating in out of school hours learning opportunities and this will help prepare them well for the rest of their lives.”
