Swansea Book fans give downloads the thumbs-up

Hundreds of book fans have signed-up to download free audio books from Swansea Council’s library service since the scheme was introduced earlier this year.

Figures show more than 500 library users have already made the most of the technology after Swansea became one of the first authorities in the UK to make it available back in April.

The service gives library members access to over 550 best-selling online titles with new titles added to the collection every month.

Dead Like You by Peter James, The Butt by Will Self and The Blue Demon by David Hewson are among the new titles this month.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “We’re delighted this service has become popular so quickly. The variety of titles and the availability of different formats means the service is appealing to people of all ages.”

The free service means downloads are available for three weeks and this means there’s no fine to pay because the material will automatically expire. Users who want to keep the audio book for longer simply have to make an online request.

One fan of the new service said: “It’s really easy to use. I joined my local library, registered for the service and could then access the library catalogue from any PC that has internet access.

“I listen to the audio books on my MP3 player which means I can stop and start it when I want to. I love using it on long bus journeys because time really seems to fly when you’re caught up in a good story.”
