Swansea University Professor appointed advisor to Welsh Language Commissioner

Professor Gwynedd Parry has been appointed a member of the Welsh Language Commissioner’s Advisory Panel by Welsh Government Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews AM.

Professor Gwynedd Parry is the Director of the Hywel Dda Research Institute and Professor of Law and Legal History at Swansea University.

The Advisory Panel, which is a statutory panel established under the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011, is tasked with providing impartial and independent advice to the Welsh Language Commissioner on matters relating to her responsibilities and powers.

These include imposing duties on organisations to implement Welsh language standards, advising the Welsh Ministers and others on language policy, and conducting inquiries into matters relating to the Welsh language.

Professor Gwynedd Parry said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to be a member of the Advisory Panel. This role will provide me with an opportunity to apply my expertise in the legal status of Welsh and minority languages jurisprudence in the cause of public service.’’

Other members of the Advisory Panel are Dr Ian Rees, Mrs Virginia Isaac and Mr Gareth Jones and their appointments will run from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2015.
