Dog owners using areas around The Knap Lake in Barry are being reminded that their pets must always be on a lead.
Following a recent incident in which a cygnet was attacked by a dog and sustained fatal injuries, the Vale of Glamorgan Council plans to step up patrols to ensure individuals observe the bye-law. Individuals ignoring the bye-law could face a fine of up to £500 if the case is taken to court.
Parks Operational manager Phil Beaman said: “The incident on Wednesday, November 18, is of great concern and it is a shame that a few irresponsible dog walkers can cause a problem. In response, I will be asking council enforcement officers and the dog wardens to give this area some extra attention.
“It is a criminal offence to allow dogs to wander freely in this area, and we would request the public to take notice of the signs and keep their pets on a lead.
“We don’t wish to be seen to be wielding a big stick and would encourage people using this popular spot to keep their dogs on a lead and to be considerate of wildlife and others in the area.”
