Schoolchildren across Torfaen are being encouraged to recycle old phonebooks for a chance to win cash prizes.
From next Monday, schools in the county borough can sign up to take part in the Torfaen Council-run scheme which is being fronted by mascot Dan Can the Super Recycler.
Schools that collect the highest number of old phonebooks per pupil before next year’s February 19 deadline will be awarded a share of £600 in cash prizes.
They are also being asked to use the directories to make Dan Can-theme sculptures before handing them over for recycling. The best designs will win cash prizes.
Torfaen Councillor John Cunningham, Executive Member for Operational Services, said: “Recycling not only saves valuable landfill space but also reduces the amount of energy needed to manufacture new products. By taking part in this challenge, pupils can have fun at the same time as learning about ways to save the environment.”
The Council-run competition replaces the annual Yellow Woods Challenge, organised by Yellow Pages, which is not running this year.
Torfaen County Borough Council’s recycling rate is currently 45 per cent- the best in South Wales.
