Talented young readers to represent county

Pupils from Ysgol Betws Gwerfyl Goch, Ysgol Maeshyfryd and Ysgol Dyffryn Iâl scored the top marks in the recent Denbighshire heat of the North East Wales English Books Quiz.

They beat 15 other schools for the chance to represent their county at the Grand Final on June 15th in Connah’s Quay where they will compete against schools from Conwy, Flintshire and Wrexham to win a trophy and book prizes, and meet the guest author Guy Bass.

Bethan M Hughes, Reading Services Manager with Denbighshire Library Service, said: “The Books Quiz is one of our main activities to promote reading for pleasure, We choose books which we know will appeal to the children and we introduce them to a range of authors and writing styles.

“Quiz day is a lot of fun and the standard in this year’s heat was incredibly high – the judges had a hard task choosing the three winning schools. Congratulations to them and we wish them every success in the final.”

The Books Quiz, now in its 13th year, is jointly organised by the library services of the 4 counties and the North East Wales Schools Library Service and it aims to introduce children aged 7-11 to the wealth of contemporary fiction and poetry for children.

Teams of children from each school read the six books on the list so that they can answer questions about the books and they prepare a short dramatic presentation on one of the books.
