Conwy County Borough Council’s new allotments at Tan y Bryn, Rhos-on-Sea are officially opened.
In total 77 allotment plots have been developed at Tan y Bryn; 65 regular plots and twelve raised plots for disabled access. The plots vary in size from 4 metres in length by 2 metres in width, to 8 metres in length by 4 metres in width.
There are gravel pathways to access the raised beds, car parking and a sustainable water supply. A borehole has been drilled to draw water up from the ground by a solar powered pump. The water is kept in a storage tank underground until the taps above ground are used. Any excess water from the allotments will filter down through the soil and find its way back to the water table.
Cllr Michael Priestley, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Environment said, “Increasing the number of allotments in communities is one of Conwy County Borough Council’s corporate priorities. Tan y Bryn is the first new allotment site created in the county for many years. Allotments can increase social opportunities, they’re great for the environment, they can help people save money and encourage all ages to eat more healthily and take more physical activity.”
All plots at the Tan y Bryn have been allocated.
