Young people involved in Swansea Council’s Youth Service have been doing their bit for people in their communities.
Eight teenage girls aged 15 and 16 have been busy organising a Christmas event for their community in Morriston. Meanwhile a group of young people from Townhill have got on their bikes to help sick children and presented a cheque for £350 to Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice.
And now in Morriston the group of girls is gearing up for a Christmas Community Fete on December 15. The teens, who are part of the Council’s Morriston Youth Project, are hoping to bring the community together for the event at Cwmrhydyceirw Memorial Hall, as well as raising funds for youth activities.
Tanya Redgrave from the Morriston Youth Service said: “The girls are really excited about this. They are going to be wearing fancy dress and are planning refreshments, stalls, a name the Teddy competition and a Santa’s Grotto in which all the children who visit Santa will get a selection pack.”
The group from the Townhill Youth Project took part in a gruelling 55-mile charity bike ride from Brecon to Cardiff to raise the cash for Ty Hafan.
Half of the money raised by the group of seven 14 to 19-year-olds went towards hosting a group of young people from Catalonia in Spain to improve links between the two countries. The group also wanted to help the children in Ty Hafan.
Gary Lerwell is one of the Swansea Council Youth Workers who was involved in the project. He said: “The Townhill Youth Project caters for over 100 young people a week and offers activities such as a youth club and the chance for young people to undertake a Duke of Edinburgh award.
“The young people here who decided to get involved in this cycle ride and organising the Spanish exchange have worked really hard.”
