Telephone Scam Warning

People are being advised to be wary of a telephone scam where a man purports to be from the council or the bank.

The warning comes after a number of incidents have been reported in Gwynedd where a man has rung private telephone numbers claiming to be from the council tax rebates office or the bank.

On each occasion the caller was attempting to obtain personal bank account details

None of the attempt were successful.

In giving general advice about not divulging any personal details over the telephone, Inspector Guy Blackwell said: “If you are unsure about the caller try to obtain his or her name and number and state you will ring them back.”

Manon Williams of Gwynedd Council’s Trading Standards Section said: “This is a despicable scam in an effort to get people to disclose their personal bank details. Members of the public are firmly advised not to provide any personal details or financial information to any unknown individual or business.”

Consumers can also reduce the amount of unwanted phone calls by registering with the telephone preference service (TPS), which also includes mobile telephone numbers. This can be done by ringing 0845 0700707 or by using the website registration form found at www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps,
