The Crown comes to the Castle

Medieval banquets are to be staged at Caldicot Castle by the owners of the Michelin starred The Crown at Whitebrook restaurant.

Multi award winning Crown Hotels and Restaurants have secured a long term catering concession with the castle owners Monmouthshire County Council to hold the popular historical events filled with fun, feasting, revelry and music.

The Monmouthshire-based group will also run the castle’s popular tea rooms and manage wedding functions at the idyllic Norman-built castle set in 55 acres of wooded parklands.

Crown Hotels and Restaurants Director Jonathan Davies said: “We’re thrilled to have won this opportunity to demonstrate another side of our business at this unique and historic location in the heart of Monmouthshire.”

Mr Davies revealed that the germ of the idea of opening at Caldicot was sown at a Back to Business Week event staged in the castle last summer.

“James Sommerin, our executive head chef, was giving a chef’s demonstration in a marquee in the grounds of the fantastic castle and while there we enquired about the banquets and other functions at the castle. One thing led to another and now we’re about to launch The Crown at Caldicot Castle which is brilliant and we just can’t wait to get started.”

Kellie Beirne, Monmouthshire’s chief officer for regeneration and culture said: “We’re delighted to have been able to award the concession to Crown Hotels and Restaurants, a company which has an unrivalled record over the years of consistent delivery of excellence. We look forward to working closely with the company over the coming years.”

Giles Howard, the council’s cabinet member for culture & heritage said: “We’re very excited about working with Crown Hotels and Restaurants and this partnership can only enhance the reputation of Caldicot Castle as a top visitor attraction.”

Caldicot Castle, owned by Monmouthshire County Council was originally founded by the Normans and developed as a royal stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored and became a grand Victorian family home.

The castle has an illustrious history of staging medieval banquets in its Great Hall which can cater for up to 110 ‘revellers’ or 80 for a traditional wedding reception.

The castle also has very popular tea rooms and is the setting for many historic re-enactments.
